Black Gaming Couple Create Doll Game Full of Melanin

Miles Kelley
C&D Turner

Ciara and Dejon Turner, shake up the tech world by infusing mobile gaming with positive characters of color. The Doll House Family app arrived late June on both Google Play and the Apple App Store. In the digital space, where only 3% of the industry includes Black developers, BBCorpWorld LLP changes the narrative to include people of all skin tones. Currently the digital divide is entirely dominated by games that promote negative racial stereotypes.

The duo decided to create the app after growing tired of looking at the gaming landscape and not seeing favorable images of Black and brown people. C&D decided that it was their mission to shake up the gaming world with characters that emote a positive self-image. Instead of casting minorities as evil, ugly, or over-sexualized characters, the Turners turned it around, creating an app that encourages people of color to walk with confidence. The pair wanted to present positive images in a game for families to enjoy. They took action to make their idea happen in the tech world. Players can pick from figures they want to navigate in a make believe land of driving vehicles, belting out tunes, or taking it easy to soak up the good life during poolside fun.

“Welcome to the Dollhouse”

A warm greeting of “Welcome to the Doll House” awaits users who download the app. Inside, statuesque, brown-skinned dolls rock purple and black gear. The lifelike characters don a crown of curls, twists, puffs, and Afro-centric braids in multiple color choices. The app transports users to a world where they see beautiful images of people of color. Players can choose a doll that best represents them. Choices include creamy cocoa skin tones to rich mahogany melanin, and everything in between. In the Doll House world, players can drive down Doll House Ave. in their shiny new car, shop for the trendiest clothes, and can lounge by the pool.

“Black and beautiful – Yeah that’s me – with my Doll House family.”

In this virtual world, there is a celebration of their Blackness, and diversity is not a dirty word. The catchy theme song sums up the purpose of this timely project. Players belt out lilting lyrics as an anthem to change the status quo. Users bop to the beat while riding down Doll House Ave.

The Doll House Family™ app is available now for download on Google Play and Apple's IOS App Store for just $1.99.
